    Abdominal Transplantation
    Chief: Abhinav Humar, MD

    UPMC's transplant programs are internationally renowned for their far-reaching influence on the entire field of transplantation. Since 1981, more than 12,000 transplants have been performed at UPMC Presbyterian and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, distinguishing UPMC as the largest transplant center in the world.


    General Surgery
    Chief: Andrew Peitzman, MD

    The Division of General Surgery offers world-class comprehensive trauma care as well as general surgery procedures by a team of experts who work together in the study, development, and implementation of new procedures and devices. The division encompasses one of the busiest and most advanced trauma centers in the region as well as specialty surgical programs, such as the Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery Program (based at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC).


    Pediatric Surgery
    Chief: George Gittes, MD

    The Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery provides comprehensive care to infants and children of all ages via Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Service is provided 24 hours a day and includes diagnosis, consultation, management, and follow-up of inpatients and outpatients.


    Surgical Oncology Services
    Vice Chairman: David L. Bartlett, MD

    The mission of Surgical Oncology Services is to provide state-of-the-art surgical care to the patient with cancer. Surgical oncologists with diverse expertise in all types of cancers provide the most up-to-date specialized care for patients suffering with cancer.


    • Breast Surgical Oncology
      Chief: Gretchen M. Ahrendt, MD

      Experts in the Division of Breast Surgical Oncology provide the most up-to-date, specialized, and focused treatment for patients with breast cancer and melanoma, specializing in early and locally advanced breast cancer, as well as cancer associated with pregnancy and menopause. Treatments include minimally invasive surgical procedures, pre-surgical or post-surgical chemotherapy hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary lymph node dissection.

    • Colorectal Surgery
      Chief: David Medich, MD

      The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery is dedicated to providing compassionate, state-of-the-art surgical care for all patients with diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum, and anus. The division's colon and rectal experts come from various disciplines, including gastroenterology, gynecology, internal medicine, oncology, and urology.

    • Endocrine Surgical Oncology
      Chief: Sally E. Carty, MD

      As one of the leading programs in the country for the treatment of endocrine disease, the Division of Endocrine Surgical Oncology offers expert, comprehensive surgical care for diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and the endocrine pancreas. UPMC endocrine surgeons work closely with specialized endocrinologists, radiologists, pathologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and other multidisciplinary specialists to provide a comprehensive team approach that meets each patient’s individual needs as safely and concisely as possible.

    • Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology
      Chief: Herbert J. Zeh III, MD

      The Division of Gastrointestinal (GI)/Surgical Oncology comprises faculty surgeons who have dedicated their careers to the treatment of patients with gastrointestinal diseases and cancers. The division’s goal is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for patients with cancers of the distal esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, and large intestine. Our surgeons work closely with the Pancreatic Cancer Center to coordinate care for patients with complex disease involving the pancreas.

    • Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery
      Chief: David Geller, MD

      The HPB division consists of four hepatobiliary surgical oncologists that specialize in treating patients with liver or pancreatic cancer, as well as benign liver diseases. The UPMC Liver Cancer Center team is led by experts at the forefront of comprehensive clinical services, innovative treatments, and fundamental research for primary and metastatic liver cancers. UPMC surgeons are among the most experienced in the United States at performing minimally invasive (laparoscopic) liver surgery, which they pioneered. Only a handful of centers in the U.S. offer this treatment option for liver tumors. UPMC experts have performed over 430 of these surgeries with band-aid sized incisions for cancers and benign liver tumors.

    Vascular Surgery
    Chief: Michel Makaroun, MD

    The Division of Vascular Surgery at UPMC offers comprehensive arterial, endovascular, and venous care by a team of vascular experts. Our division delivers high-quality patient care and provides consultation services, both outpatient and inpatient endovascular interventions, as well as surgical procedures for the full range of vascular-related diseases and conditions.
