Dr. Louis Alarcon Named UPMC Presbyterian Vice President of Medical Affairs

Congratulations to Louis H. Alarcon, MD, FACS, FCCM, who has been named to the UPMC Presbyterian leadership role of Vice President of Medical Affairs. 

Dr. Alarcon has spent his entire professional career at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, starting as a medical student in 1988, continuing as a resident and then a fellow, and as an attending physician, intensivist, and faculty member since 2002. He is also president-elect of the UPMC Presbyterian Medical Staff and serves as co-director of the UPMC Patient Blood Management Program. Dr. Alarcon has a strong track record of collaboration with leaders across all specialties and disciplines. Examples include his roles in the creation of a multidisciplinary venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis pathway that has resulted in a 35% reduction of VTE events on the trauma service over the past four years and the development of the Trauma Massive Transfusion Protocol at UPMC Presbyterian, as well as his work implementing a number of evidence-based guidelines for the management of trauma patients.
