Congratulations to Juan C. Puyana, MD, who was selected to receive the Medical Student Research Mentoring Merit Award from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. This prestigious award is initiated by medical student recommendations and is presented to a Longitudinal Research Project mentor of a graduating Pitt medical student in recognition for outstanding mentoring over the course of the project.

Harrison, MD Chair in Surgery; and Matthew Randall Rosengart, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Academic Training, who was appointed Watson Family Chair in Surgery. Both appointments in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine became effective December 1, 2019.

Andrew B. Peitzman, MD presented the Oriens Keynote Address at the 32nd Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) Annual Scientific Assembly held January 15-19, 2019 in Austin, Texas. The lecture was published in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and is posted on EAST’s website with permission from the journal.

On May 8th, 2019, we held our 17th Annual Research Day and Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science. Attendees enjoyed a phenomenal presentation from our guest lecturer, Dr. George Miller from the Department of Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine. His talk was entitled “New Approaches to Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy.”
