Surgery Faculty Receive New Grants

Congratulations to our following faculty members who recently received new research grants funded by the National Institutes of Health:

  • Anita P. Courcoulas, MD, MPH received consortium activity funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for the project “Alliance of Randomized Trials of Medicine vs Metabolic Surgery in Type 2 Diabetes - (ARMMS-T2D)” (project period:  07/04/2017 – 06/30/2022). The ARMMS-T2D alliance was formed by four investigative groups (Cleveland Clinic, Joslin Diabetes Center/Brigham & Women's Hospital Boston, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Washington) to provide long-term Level-1, evidence-based data on diabetes remission and related outcomes to guide clinical practice for patients with diabetes and mild to moderate obesity.
  • Jason L. Sperry, MD, MPH is the Principal Investigator on a project funded by the National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute, “Pragmatic, Prehospital Group O Whole Blood Early Resuscitation Pilot Trial” (project period: 07/05/2017 – 05/31/2020). Dr. Sperry’s research group will characterize the efficacy of whole blood resuscitation initiated in the prehospital setting to patients in hemorrhagic shock. Their findings could be used to reduce the downstream morbidity and mortality attributable to hemorrhage, shock, and coagulopathy.
