Award Winners, 2019 Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science/Department of Surgery Research Day

On May 8th, 2019, we held our 17th Annual Research Day and Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science. Attendees enjoyed a phenomenal presentation from our guest lecturer, Dr. George Miller from the Department of Surgery at the New York University School of Medicine. His talk was entitled “New Approaches to Pancreatic Cancer Immunotherapy.”

Congratulations to the award winners selected from over 80 abstracts submitted for the scientific program. Each awardee will receive a certificate and a cash prize.

Residents Present at 2018 Med Ed Day

 

Several general surgery residents participated in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) Academy of Master Educators (AME) 3rd annual Med Ed Day on September 21, 2018. The event celebrates the educational innovations and scholarship of students, fellows, residents, and faculty across all Pitt schools of the health sciences. The event is sponsored by the AME in partnership with the Office of Faculty Affairs, UPSOM Office of the Vice Dean, and the Office of Academic Career Development.

Resident Dr. Samer Tohme Participates in Efforts to Support Physician Scientists

 

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article “Pitt School of Medicine to launch Physician-Scientist Incubator Program” describes a new award to the University of Pittsburgh to support and prepare physicians for laboratory research. Our resident Samer T. Tohme, MD helped with the grant application and speaks about the importance of the program in the article.

On May 2nd, 2018 we held our 16th Annual Research Day and Richard L. Simmons Lecture in Surgical Science. Attendees were treated to an outstanding presentation, “Considerations on the Creative Process in Clinical Problem Solving” by this years’ Richard L. Simmons lecturer, Elliot L. Chaikof, MD, PhD, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. 

Participants delivered 10 exceptional oral presentations and 47 outstanding poster presentations. The following presenters were selected for special recognition:
